PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION
BYLAWS
ARTICLE I NAME
The name of the organization shall be the SUMMIT PTO, INC.
ARTICLE II OBJECTIVES
The main purpose of the Summit Elementary
Parent Teacher (PTO) is to operate as a non-profit organization that will
support the growth and education of the children, parents, and teachers of
The PTO shall act as an agent to promote understanding of the general and specific issues of the educational processes in the school community.
The PTO shall act as an instrument for the interchange of ideas and information.
The PTO shall promote volunteerism through participatory involvement in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
The PTO shall sponsor fund-raising through different activities.
ARTICLE III POLICIES
Sec. 1. This organization shall be noncommercial, nonsectarian, and nonpartisan.
Sec. 2. This organization shall not seek to direct the administrative activites of the school nor to control its policies.
Sec. 3. This organization may cooperate with other organizations and agencies active in education.
ARTICLE IV MEMBERSHIP
Sec. 1. Membership shall consist of any interested citizen, teacher, or parent/guardian of the children who attend Summit Elementary School of Monroe County Community School Corporation.
Sec. 2. There shall be no dues required in order to be a member of this organization.
ARTICLE V OFFICERS
Sec. 1. The elected officers shall be President(s), Vice President(s), Secretary(s), and Treasurer(s), known as the executive board.
Sec. 2. Each school year a teacher representative shall be approved by the executive board after a consultation with the principal.
ARTICLE VI EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Sec. 1. The executive committee shall consist of the executive board, the principal of the school, and the teacher representative.
Sec. 2. The duties of the executive committee shall be: (A) To appoint standing committees, (B) To transact necessary business in the intervals between organization meetings and such other business as may be referred to it by the organization, (C) To approve plans of all standing committees, (D) To prepare and submit to the organization for approval a budget that shall include the necessary expenses, (E) To appoint a committee of not less than two members at least two weeks before the last meeting in May to audit the treasure’s accounts.
Sec. 3. Regular meetings of the executive committee shall be held at the discretion of the president(s). A majority shall constitute a quorum.
Sec. 4. The executive committee meetings will be open to sincere parents wanting to make constructive suggestions concerning PTO related business.
ARTICLE VII DUTIES OF THE OFFICERS
Sec. 1. The president(s) shall preside at all meetings of the organization. He or she shall be a member ex-officio of all committees except the nominating committees.
Sec. 2. The vice-president(s) shall act as aid to the president and will perform those duties of the president with the absence of that officer.
Sec. 3. The secretary shall keep an accurate record of all meetings of the organization.
Sec. 4. The treasurer(s) shall receive all monies, and keep an accurate record of the receipts and expenditures. The treasurer shall present a statement of account at every meeting and at other times when requested by the executive committee.
Sec. 5. All officers shall deliver to their successors all official material of the organization no later than the June meeting following the election of their successors.
ARTICLE VIII ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Sec. 1. The president shall appoint a nominating committee in April. A proposed slate of officers will be presented at a general PTO meeting. At this time additional nominations from the floor can also be accepted as long as the consent of each nominee has been obtained prior to his or her nomination. Elections will be held at the May meeting by means of a secret ballot, or by voice approval of an unopposed slate. The newly elected officers will be presented at that time.
Sec. 2. The terms of office shall be one year, or until their successors are elected.
Sec. 3. In the event that any office shall become vacant during the course of the term, said office shall be filled for the expired term by a person elected by a majority vote of the remaining members of the executive committee, notice of such election having been given to the membership at large.
Sec. 4. Any officer not attending or participating by proxy in three (3) consecutive board meetings and/or general meetings shall be replaced in said office as stated in Article 8, Sec 3 of the Summit Bylaws.
ARTICLE IX STANDING COMMITTEES
Sec. 1. The executive committee as deemed necessary to carry on the work of the organization shall create such standing committees. The officers shall select the chairman. Their term shall be one year.
Sec. 2. The chairman of each standing committee shall submit a plan of work to the executive committee for approval.
ARTICLE X MEETINGS
Sec. 1. Regularly scheduled meetings of this organization shall

Sec. 3 The executive committee may call special meetings with five days notice having been given.
Sec.4 Five members present shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business at any general business meeting.
ARTICLE XI ARTICLES OF ORGANIZATION
The bylaws of the organization shall be deemed to be part of its articles of organization.
ARTICLE XII AMENDMENTS
Sec. 1. These bylaws may be amended at any regular meeting of the organization by a 2/3rds vote of members present and voting, provided written notice has been given by an appointed committee at the previous meeting.
Sec. 2. A revised set of bylaws must be adopted as a substitute for these bylaws by a majority vote at a regularly scheduled meeting provided written notice has been given at the previous meeting.
Sec. 3. The bylaws shall be distributed once a year at the first regularly scheduled fall meeting.
Sec. 4. In the event of dissolution of the organization, after the settlement of all outstanding debts, its assets shall be distributed to an educational organization or institute which qualifies for tax exemption under the section 501(c) (3) and which organization or institute can best accomplish the general objectives for which this body was organized.
